About the Hijri calendar

The Hijri calendar is the Islamic lunar calendar: 12 months of roughly 29 to 30 days, about 354 days a year, so Islamic dates move earlier by around 11 days each Gregorian year. It began with the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, and it sets the dates of Ramadan, the two Eids and Hajj.

The twelve months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah.
